Laser Trabeculoplasty
A laser treatment that improves drainage through the eye's existing drainage angle, used mainly for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension — the most common form of glaucoma. The most commonly used version is selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), which targets specific cells without damaging surrounding tissue.
What it is
A laser treatment that improves drainage through the eye's existing drainage angle, used mainly for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension — the most common form of glaucoma. The most commonly used version is selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), which targets specific cells without damaging surrounding tissue.
When might Dr. Puja Sheth recommend this?
Often as an early treatment option — sometimes alongside eye drops, sometimes as an alternative for patients who find it difficult to use drops consistently. It's generally considered for open-angle glaucoma rather than angle-closure glaucoma, which is treated differently (see laser iridotomy).
How the procedure works
A laser is applied to the drainage tissue inside the eye (the trabecular meshwork), improving how well it drains fluid and lowering eye pressure as a result.
What to expect
An outpatient procedure performed in a treatment room, using numbing drops beforehand.
Recovery and follow-up
Little to no recovery time for most patients. Eye pressure is checked at a follow-up visit some weeks later, since the full effect takes time to develop.
