Laser Iridotomy and Iridoplasty
Laser procedures used mainly for angle-closure glaucoma. Iridotomy creates a small opening in the iris to improve drainage; iridoplasty reshapes part of the iris to open a narrowed angle.
What it is
Laser procedures used mainly for angle-closure glaucoma. Iridotomy creates a small opening in the iris to improve drainage; iridoplasty reshapes part of the iris to open a narrowed angle.
When might Dr. Puja Sheth recommend this?
Often preventatively, for patients found to have a narrow drainage angle at risk of closing, even before any attack occurs — and also to treat existing angle-closure glaucoma. Since narrow angles are frequently present in both eyes, preventative treatment of the unaffected eye is often considered too, based on your specific evaluation.
How the procedure works
A laser creates a precise small opening (iridotomy) or gently reshapes iris tissue (iridoplasty), usually performed in a treatment room rather than a full operating theatre.
What to expect
A quick outpatient procedure, using numbing drops rather than general anesthesia.
Recovery and follow-up
Minimal recovery time for most patients, with a follow-up visit to confirm the intended effect on pressure and drainage.
